Two higher levels of ballistic protection requirements

IIIA: To comply with Type IIIA, a new and unworn sample of Ballistic vest protects against a specified mass of 8.1 g (125 gr) and a velocity of 448 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (1470 ft/s ± 30 ft/s) and .44 Magnum Semi Jacketed Hollow Point (SJHP) bullets with a specified mass of 15.6 g (240 gr) and a velocity of 436 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (1430 ft)/s ± 30 ft/s).

Type IIIA compliance also requires treated Ballistic vest samples to withstand a .357 SIG FMJ with a specified mass of 8.1 g (125 gr) and a velocity of 430 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (1410 ft/s ± 30 ft) FN bullet/s) and .44 Magnum SJHP bullet with a specified mass of 15.6 g (240 gr) and a velocity of 408 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (1340 ft/s ± 30 ft/s).

III: Type III compliance for hard armor or panels requires samples to be tested under conditional conditions using a 7.62 mm FMJ, steel-sheathed bullet (US military designation M80) with a specified mass of 9.6 g (147 g) at a velocity of 847 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (2780 ft/s ± 30 ft/s).

Compliance with Type III Flexible Armor requires samples to be used in both "as a new" and conditioned condition with a 7.62 mm FMJ steel sheathed bullet (US military designation M80) of specified mass 9.6 g (147 g) and velocity is 847 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (2780 ft/s ± 30 ft/s).

IV: Type IV compliance for hard armor or panels requires Ballistic vest samples to be tested in the conditioned state using a .30 caliber armor piercing (AP) bullet (US military designation M2 AP) with a specified mass of 10.8 g (166 gr), and at a speed of 878 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (2880 ft/s ± 30 ft/s).

Flexible Armor Type IV compliance requires Ballistic vest samples to be tested in "as new" condition and condition using a .30 caliber AP bullet (US military designation M2 AP) with a specified mass of 10.8 grams (166 grams) and a velocity of 878 m/s ± 9.1 m/s (2880 ft/s ± 30 ft/s).
