The general purpose of a backpack is to carry your belongings with you. In the military, this is a must for long-duration missions or anytime you need to carry a lot of gear with you. Since this is what the backpack is designed for, an Army backpack tends to have a larger capacity than other backpacks. It should also be able to persist in challenging conditions; that's why the U.S. Army uses backpacks designed for durability and resistance to abrasion or punctures.

Light Loading Equipment Moore
Army standard backpack
MOLLE stands for Modular Light Load Equipment. These bags are designed to improve load transport and individual effectiveness in the field. MOLLE is an interface system and does not refer to any one specific device.
The MOLLE is often confused with the US military's previous generation Modular Backpack System ALICE backpack. The MOLLE bag has several improvements that make it superior to historic designs. MOLLE is composed of many different components, allowing almost unlimited configurations.
MOLLE has four different types of packs: Army backpacks, Sustainment Backpacks, Mission Backpacks, and Assault Backpacks. The rucksack takes the form of a high-capacity backpack for extended missions, capable of carrying additional equipment in addition to the soldier's combat load. Supply bags are used to supplement the rucksack with extra supplies when the extra carrying capacity of the canvas is not needed.
The Assault Backpack is the smallest of the MOLLEs and is designed to equip Special Forces with the gear they need for short-duration missions; this includes ammunition, food, and medical supplies. The Mission Pack is an extra backpack that can be used in place of a heavy maintenance pack.
The Army's standard pack is known as the Improved External Tactical Vest Harness, often referred to as the IOTV. It's made of heavy-duty ballistic nylon with plastic inserts for maximum protection while still being lightweight. There are a number of pockets on the outside of the vest, both on the front and sides, for carrying weapons, ammunition, helmets, optics, medical supplies, rations, and water bottles. The back is mostly featureless, allowing airflow to reduce sweating.
IOTV Army backpacks are standard equipment in the US Army and have built-in MOLLE webbing to which Special Forces can attach additional gear such as pouches or other packs such as backpacks or rucksacks. While new models are always being developed, this design has been around since at least the 90s and is a proven design with a very efficient weight distribution system.
